There is no doubt that the biggest star in the UFC is Conor McGregor. His rise to stardom was unprecedented and today he is the most popular and most well-paid fighter on the roster. Any fighter would take a fight against McGregor, and many call him out on the regular. Even fighters who are not in his weight class I’ve been calling him out. McGregor began his UFC career fighting at 145 pounds, he later won a championship in the 155-pound division and his next that will be at 170 pounds. However, now one of the welterweight staples of the division Stephen Thompson is saying McGregor is not as big as people think he is.
McGregor has been away from the UFC for almost 2 years, during that time he has been bulking up and even been accused of using steroids. His return bout will be at welterweight against Michael Chandler but perhaps McGregor is not as big as everybody thinks he is. Recently Thompson joined McGregor during the filming of The Ultimate Fighter and said, yes, although he did look bigger in the pictures they took together there’s a little trick behind that.
Stephen Thompson is revealing that Conor McGregor works the camera angles
Thompson was in Las Vegas filming a television commercial when he was invited to join McGregor at The Ultimate Fighter gym. The pair are represented by the same agency and Thompson was more than happy to lend a hand in training some of the fighters. A picture was snapped of the two of them together that had the internet blazing. In the photo, McGregor looks much bigger than the welterweight Thompson. Now Thompson, in an interview with Lowkick MMA, is giving the background on that photo.
“Most of the guys that I fight, you know, they walk over 200 pounds and he looks bigger but he’s like 185 at his heaviest. Yeah, he’s not a big guy,” he said. “He knows when a camera turns on. He’s like, telepathy. He turns on his persona. We’re taking picture together and we’re like in our fighting stance, but he inches forward. So looking at a picture he looks so much bigger than me.”
Despite the size discrepancy, of course, Thompson would be more than happy to entertain a fight against McGregor. A fight against McGregor automatically means big pay and big attention. Thompson is currently trying to work his way up to it with the next welterweight title shot, something that now McGregor is doing as well. There has been talk that if McGregor wins his next fight against Michael Chandler he could be next in line for the welterweight title shot.
