Gonzalo Borondo, the acclaimed Spanish artist, has garnered recognition for his haunting and surreal creations, which artfully dissolve the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Back in October of last year, during the Golden Street Art 2020 festival, the artist painted a mesmerizing optical illusion in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, turning an old set of stairs it into a majestic royal gate.
If you aren’t aware of Gonzalo’s work, at first glance you might think that the Jules Baudelocque street is a dead end with a sturdy metal gate at the end. However, as you get closer, the gates suddenly start to stretch out and you begin to realize that it’s all just a cleverly painted optical illusion. However, seeing it unfold is just as impressive as the artwork itself.

In some cases, these appear grotesque, and some others they appear harmonious and childish.”

Gonzalo says that the represented images were created as a consequence of the exploration and the subjective comprehension of the territory. “For example, the interaction with the school École primaire Jules Ferry, located at the foot of the artwork,” explained the artist.
